The music heard in this recording is known as Bundiani. For the Malinke people, every child is cared for by the community as a whole and Bundiani is an opportunity for the children to have a voice. This tradition has been handed down through countless generations and continues to play an important role today.

As with most folk music, Malinke music has moments of structured improvisation within the framework of the song or piece of music. These improvisations are clearly highlighted in these recordings, which were made in three different villages in the Gberedou region of Upper Guinea between 2005 and 2008.
